BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana had a strong first day of the Indiana Relays. Seventeen Hoosiers qualified for Saturday finals, eight finished in the top-three, and four took first place. Senior Wendi Robinson led the way, winning the invitational section of the 3,000m run with a provisional qualifying time.
Robinson finished in 9:28.48 to win the 3,000m run. Her time was more than two seconds faster than the second-place finisher and nearly six seconds faster than the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Her time is the fifth best in Division I this season and the fastest in the Big Ten.
The Indiana `A' team won the distance medley relay. Freshmen Breanne Ehrman, Jordan Gray and Chelsea Blanchard and senior Courtney Freiberger finished in 11:54.77 for an eleven second victory. The group finished 100 meters ahead of the Xavier team that took second place.
Senior Tiffany Howard was the top qualifier for the Saturday final in the shot put. She recorded a heave of 14.93m (48-11.75), which was 35 centimeters better than the second-best qualifier.
Sophomore Ben Stephen was the top collegiate qualifier in the men's shot put.
He recorded a throw of 17.41m for the second best qualification for Saturday's final. He finished behind only professional thrower Cory Martin.
In the invitational section of the men's mile, sophomore Ben Hubers recorded a career best time of 4:06.37, which is just 2.37 seconds off the NCAA provisional mark. Hubers was the third fastest of the collegiate runners in the race.
