Alabama Relays Day One - Three Hoosiers in Top Four of Decathlon on Day One

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Indiana participated in day one of the Alabama Relays on Thursday, March 27. The day consisted of men's decathlon and women's heptathlon action. Through five events in the decathlon, three Hoosiers have recorded scores that are in the four best of the meet.
In second place, assistant coach Jake Wiseman, competing unattached, won the shot put and long jump events en route to a day one point total of 3,595. His winning heave in the shot put of 13.62m was 1.23m better than the second place finisher in the event.
In third place was senior David Robb who recorded five outdoor career bests on the day. He won the 400m dash with a time of 50.03 seconds, which was .6 seconds faster than the second fastest time. Robb also recorded a second-place finish in the 100m dash, finishing just .02 seconds behind event winner and teammate Chris Sackmann. Robb was also second in the high jump, recording the same height as Wiseman to tie the IU coach for the second-place spot. The senior was also third in the long jump. Robb finished the day with a total of 3,456 points.
Sackmann, a sophomore, finished the day in fourth-place overall. His first place finish in the 100m dash was with a career best time of 11.11 seconds. He also recorded new outdoor bests in the other four events with a second-place finish in the 400m dash, a tie for fourth in the high jump and fifth-place finish in the long jump. Sackmann's point total for the day was 3,384.
Sophomore Matt Schmitz also competed on the day, finishing in eighth place and less than 100 points out of sixth. His point total of 3,074 comes from career best outdoor performances in each of the five events. Schmitz finished sixth in the 100m dash.
