Fleming, Ketchum Shine in Hammer Throw as IU Closes Day in Third Place

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana men's track and field team sits in third place after one day of competition at the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Complex on May 12. Led by Wil Fleming and Ryan Ketchum's performance in the hammer throw, the Hoosiers tallied 14 points in championship's opening day.
In the finals of the hammer throw, Fleming took runner-up with a regional-qualifying throw of 62.62m (205-05). Ketchum finished just behind Fleming with a personal best and regional-qualifying mark of 57.75m (189-06) for third place.
After the first completed event, the Hoosier tandem put IU in first place with 14 points, three points ahead of second-place Iowa.
IU's Jordan Kyle rounded out competition for the Hoosiers at the opening day of the meet. Kyle recorded an impressive 17th-place time of 30:47.09 in the 10, 000m as the Hoosiers closed the day in third place with 14 points.
Big Ten Championship action resumes on Saturday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. The meet will open with the conclusion of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Live results will be available throughout the meet at www.bigten.org.
