IU Takes Third; Neville, Haas and 4x400m Relay Team Crowned Big Ten Champions

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana men's track and field team took third place with 105 points at the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 14 at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Complex. David Neville took home both the 200m and 400m titles, while Stephen Haas was crowned champion in the 5,000m. Additionally, the Indiana 4x400m relay team comprised of Ryan Smith, Trey Warfield, Doug Dayhoff and Neville, won the conference title for the first time since 1990.
Neville, who won both the 200m and 400m title during the indoor season, repeated his incredible feat with a pair of championships in both. Neville took first in the 200m with a regional-qualifying mark of 20.85. The Merrillville, Ind., product went on to claim the 400m crown with a regional time of 45.49. Neville claimed the 200m outdoor title in 2004 and brought home the 400m championship the last two seasons. Dayhoff took eight in the 400m with a time of 48.10.
An All-American in the 5,000m, Hass, earned his first Big Ten title in the event with a first-place time of 14:00.54. John Jefferson scored for the Hoosiers in the event as well with a personal-best time of 14:12.47. Charles Koeppen also turned in a personal record with an 18th-place mark of 14:50.58.
Indiana's 4x400m relay team claimed IU's first Big Ten title since Micah Beachler, Lewis Brandon, Glenn Terry and Alan Turner took home the honor in 1990. The team turned in a regional-qualifying and first-place time of 3:08.21.
Ryan Ketchum scored for the Hoosiers for the second time this championship with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a hurl of 17.32m (56-10.00).
Jefferson scored again for the Hoosiers with a third-place finish in the 1,500m. Jefferson turned in a Mideast Regional qualifying standard of 3:47.62 in the competition's final day.
In the men's pole vault, Jeff Coover continued to excel by taking third in the event after clearing 5.05m (16-06.75). Blayne Burkholder took 12th in the event with a mark of 4.75m (15-07.00), while Kyle Lechlitner claimed the 16th-best mark of 4.60m (15-01.00).
Smith, who was a part of the 4x400m champion team, scored for the Hoosiers by placing eighth in the 400m hurdles. Smith turned in a 53.78 performance in the event.
Marcus Thigpen and Wil Glover also scored for Indiana in the finals of the 100m. Thigpen ran a 10.75 en route to a seventh-place finish, while Glover turned in a 10.80 performance for eighth place.
Kyle Jenkins added to IU's point total for the meet with a second-place finish in the triple jump. Jenkins too runner-up after a regional-qualifying leap of 16.04m (52-07.50). Additionally, Jenkins' jump marked a new personal best for the Kent, Wash., native.
The Hoosiers have a week off before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., for the 2006 Mideast Regionals, May 26-27.
