Hoosiers Close Day One of 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Indiana men's track and field team closed day one of the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium in Champaign with in seventh place with four points.
Sophomore Matt Schmitz completed day one of the decathlon in 13th place with 3,228 points. He finished 11th in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.58 for 11th place. In the long jump, he recorded a mark of 6.19 meters to take 13th in the event, and tossed a mark of 10.59 meters in the shot put for 12th place. In the high jump, Schmitz cleared 1.77 meters for 11th place. In the final event of the decathlon, Schmitz ran a 51.62 to place ninth in the 400-meters.
Junior Jeff Coover placed fifth in the pole vault with a jump of 5.15 meters earning four points for IU.
Tomorrow's action gets underway at 10:30 a.m. ET with the men's 110-meters hurdles in the decathlon.
