Coover Earns All-America Honors in the Pole Vault on Day Three of the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - Indiana junior Jeff Coover earned his first NCAA All-America honor after finishing seventh in the pole vault on the third day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, June 13.
Coover missed on his first two attempts and made his third at 5.10 meters, moving on to 5.25 meters. He missed on his first attempt at 17-02.75 mark, but cleared his second to earn his seventh-place finish.
The All-America honor is the first of Coover's career and IU's first men's outdoor pole vault All-American since Mark Buse finished third in 1995 championships. He is also the ninth outdoor pole vault All-American in Indiana men's track and field history.
Senior Abbie Stechschulte opened the heptathlon in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.58 to take third in her heat and 22nd overall after seven heats. She earned 898 points in the first event.
In the high jump, Stechschulte cleared 1.54 meters, 1.57, before clearing a final height of 1.60 meters (5-03.00) to finish ninth in her flight and 22nd overall earning another 736 points.
Stechschulte then threw 12.18 meters (39-11.50) to finish ninth in her flight and overall to add 673 more points to her total. She improved on each of her attempts, recording a mark of 11.91 meters and then 12.16 meters before her final mark.
However, due to an injury, Stechschulte was forced to withdraw from competition prior to the 200-meter dash.
Senior Kyle Jenkins used a mark of 15.98 meters (52-05.25) to qualify for the finals of tomorrow's triple jump. He placed second in his flight and fourth overall. Jenkins opened the event with a leap of 15.25 meters before jumping his best mark on his second attempt. In his final attempt, he recorded a mark of 15.50 meters.
Jenkins will compete for his second career outdoor All-America honor beginning at 2 p.m. ET at Drake Stadium.
