Turner, Poore, Alums Advance at USAs

EUGENE, Ore. - It was a successful first day for IU's representatives at the USA Jr. and Sr. Championships. In preliminary action, Hoosiers De'Sean Turner and Andrew Poore and alums Molly Beckwith, Rachelle Boone-Smith and David Neville all advanced through first round races. In field events, 2011 redshirt Taja Moore took fifth in the junior discus and Aarik Wilson took eighth in the senior triple jump.
Turner clocked a time of 8:40.86 for fifth in heat one of the 3,000m steeplechase, taking an automatic spot in the finals. Poore was sixth in the second heat, advancing via time with a 8:42.38. The two Hoosiers are among only five collegians to make the final.
Moore took fifth in the very first event to compete at the meet, launching a heave of 46.64m (153-0). She launched the throw on her sixth and final attempt, moving from sixth to fifth.
In the women's shot put, Faith Sherrill finished 14th with a heave of 15.98m (52-5.25).
Beckwith clocked a time of 2:04.77 to take second in her heat and automatically advance to semifinal action in the 800 meters. Boone-Smith was third in her heat of the 100, advancing automatically in 11.28, and in the 400, Neville clocked a time of 46.08 and advanced on time.
Wilson finished eighth with a mark of 16.64m (54-7.25). The 2008 Olympian is in his first season of competition after taking two years off to recover from injury. John Jefferson had the 14th-best time in the 1,500 meters but was unable to advance to the 12-man final. He clocked a time of 3:42.04.
