SETTING THE SCENE?
Helmer takes over a men's team that returns All-American and Big Ten Champion triple-jumper Kyle Jenkins as well as fellow Big Ten Champions and NCAA qualifiers long jumper Kiwan Lawson and pole vaulter Blayne Burkholder.
Helmer also inherits a very talented group of distance runners including 2007 cross country All-American Jordan Kyle. A fellow distance runner, freshman Cole Hardacre, earned Second Team All Big-Ten accolades for his performance with the 2007 cross country team.
The Indiana women's track and field team is led by sophomore Vera Neuenswander. Owning IU's pole vault records in both indoor and outdoor, Neuenswander was the 2007 Big Ten outdoor champion and qualified for the national meet in the both seasons. She was also named the Big Ten Indoor Freshman of the year.
Juniors Caity Lauer and Wendi Robinson return to the team after both were members of Indiana's distance medley relay last year. The duo contributed to a record-setting performance in the event, when they set an IU record at the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 2 with a time of 11:25.16. Lauer also qualified for the Mideast Regional in the 800m run. Robinson recorded Indiana's fifth-fastest time in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:53.11.
Of the other athletes returning from last season, sophomore Jackie Coleman was a Mideast Regional qualifier in the long jump after recording her season-best leap of 6.00 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, and junior thrower Tiffany Howard led the Hoosiers with a toss of 14.95 meters in the shot put last season. Sophomore Faith Sherrill recorded the fourth-farthest hammer throw in school history with a mark of 48.07 meters.
Abbie Stechschulte transferred to IU for the 2008 season from West Virginia. Stechschulte followed former West Virginia coach, and current IU associate head coach, Jeff Huntoon to Indiana. Stechschulte was a three-time NCAA qualifier and All-American at West Virginia in the pentathlon. She also won two BIG EAST championships.
