BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana track and field team takes part in its second meet of 2007 when it hosts the Indiana Open II. Events begin at noon.

Indiana competes in its second meet this season when it hosts the Indiana Open II. The Hoosiers will host seven indoor meets this season.

Junior Kyle Jenkins started the year off at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6 with a provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump. His leap of 15.51 meters is just off his indoor personal-best mark of 15.45 meters. He was an All-American in the event in the 2006 outdoor season. Jenkins was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 9 for his performance at the Indiana Open.

Senior Kiwan Lawson leaped to a distance of 7.49 meters in the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. His mark was three inches off a provisional qualifying time. Lawson qualified for NCAA's in the event last season in indoor competition.

Sophomore Jeff Coover cleared 5.10 meters in the pole vault at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. The mark tied his personal best, which was set last season at the Hoosier Relays on Feb. 4, 2006.

Three members of the Hoosiers track and field team also play football for Indiana. Marcus Thigpen, Greg Brown and Dan Kinsey participated with coach Terry Hoeppner's squad during the fall. Thigpen led the nation in kick return yardage in 2006, averaging 30.13 yards per return. He also amassed 387 rushing yards on the season as a running back. He is a standout sprinter for Indiana, and stands fourth all-time in the Hoosier record books with a 6.77 time in the 60m. Brown, a starting defensive tackle, tallied 42 tackles on the season, with a game high of seven against Connecticut on Sept. 23. He did not compete during the track season last year, but has a personal best of 15.88m in the shot and 16.22m in the weight throw, done in 2005. Kinsey played in three games last season at defensive back. He will compete in the multi events this fall. In high school, Kinsey was a national champion decathlete.

The Hoosiers will host the 2007 Big Ten Indoor Men's Championship on Feb. 24-25. Indiana last hosted the championship in 2000. Its last team win was in 1992. The Hoosiers finished fifth last year.
