Hoosiers Finish Third Purdue (1-25-03)
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -The Indiana University men's and women's track and field teams competed in its second indoor competition of the season for a three-team meet at Purdue Saturday. The women's squad finished first with 115 points and the men's team was second third with 100.5 points.
The men's team had four first-place finishes on the day. Sophomore Aarik Wilson placed first in the long jump and the triple jump. His leap of 16.01 m was not only good enough for a first place finish in the triple jump event, but it also exceeded his jump from last weeks meet at Michigan of 15.93 m. Teammate Hasaan Reddick placed second, behind Wilson, in the triple jump with 15.54 m.
In the one mile run freshman Sean Jefferson finished first in a time of 4:11.96. Aaron Fisher of Ohio State was a close second, finishing in 4:15.31.
The Hoosiers took first and second place in the 600 meter run, with sophomore Russell Hollis finishing in 1:21.25 and junior Cedric Jackson following in a time of 1:24.04.
In the 400 meter run IU took the second, third and fourth place slots. Ryan Sarbinoff finished in 49.45, just .07 seconds away from capturing first place. Daniel Martin and Kevin Kempf finished third and fourth, respectively.
Indiana wrapped up the day in fashion, finishing first in the 4x400 meter relay, posting a time of 3:18.95. Purdue followed the Hoosiers finishing in 3:22.26.
"We had some performances that were very good, but we also had some that were not so good," men's head coach Marshall Goss said. "We have to go back to the drawing board to get back on track. We ran with two very good teams today and we didn't do the things we had to do in order to win. But like I said, we had some individual performances that were very good."
On the women's side, the Hoosiers had seven first-place finishes. Leading Indiana was seniors Rachelle Boone and Danielle Carruthers. Boone had two first place finishes as Carruthers captured a first and second place finish. Boone secured first in the 60 and 200-meter dash with times of 7.43 and 24.55, respectively. Carruthers' first place finish came in the 60 meter hurdles.
The Hoosiers captured the first four spots in the 60-meter dash and the first three positions in the 200-meter dash. Boone led the squad finishing first with a time of 7.43. Carruthers came in second, 7.44, Ara Towns third, 7.68 and Karla Marshall fourth in 7.73. Towns also finished second in the 200 as Marshall finished third.
