Tiger Classic Recap (01-30-04)
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Indiana men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Tiger Classic at Hearnes Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Missouri on Friday night. Three Hoosier athletes -- Ara Towns, Courntey Johnson and Chris Powers -- broke Hearnes Fieldhouse records
For the men's team, senior Chris Powers turned in a record-breaking performance in the 3000 meter run. Powers set a new Hearnes Fieldhouse record by finishing in 8:13.46. Senior Rodney Hollis took the 800 meter title by finishing in 1:51.72.
Sophomore Ryan Ketchum achieved a new personal best in the shot put. His heave of 17.18m/56-04.50 was the second best among collegiate throwers in the event. Sophomore Wil Fleming posted a second-place showing with a weight throw 17.46/57-03.50. Ketchum added a personal best of 16.18/53.01 in the weight throw as well.
Sophomore David Neville picked up the victory in the 400 meter dash by clocking a time of 48.81. Seniors Ryan Sarbinoff (49.78) and Daniel Martin (50.03) placed third and fourth in the event, respectively.
Junior sprinter Ara Towns earned Indiana's first NCAA provisional mark of the season in the 60 meter dash. Towns crossed the finish line in 7.43 to win the race and set a new Hearnes Center Fieldhouse record. Teammate and fellow junior Karla Marshall placed second with a time of 7.65.
Freshman Courtney Johnson set a new personal best and Hearnes Center Fieldhouse record as she captured the win in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.53. Another pair of Hoosier freshmen, Lorian Price (8.96) and Darcelle McCutcheon (8.99) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Hoosiers posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 meter dash. Junior Charlene Maddox won the race in 25.02, Towns came in second in 25.56 and Marshall took third in 25.60. Maddox also finished first in the 400 meter dash and Kristen Kallner placed second in 58.72, a personal best time.
Senior Audrey Giesler had the meet's best collegiate time in the 3000 meter run as she finished in 9:52.87. In the 600-yard race, freshman Michelle Huber placed first with a time of 1:25.96. Senior Lauren Chesnut finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.12m/39-09.25.
The women's 4x400 relay team finished first with a time of 3:52.74.
Both Indiana teams return home to Gladstein Fieldhouse to host the Indiana Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 and 7.
