BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The members of the Indiana University track & field teams are close. However, for some the closeness is inherent. In addition to sharing a common team spirit, a handful of athletes also share a genetic bond- two sets of twins, a brother and sister pair and a father coaching his daughter.

Twins Britney and Courtney Freiberger are mutually pleased to be competing with one another here at IU. The freshmen from Floyd Knobs, Ind., often race in the same events, the 600-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles.

"I have been competing with Courtney for as long as I can remember," Britney Freiberger said. "We've done everything together our whole lives. My parents don't like when the one who wins rags on the other for losing, but it happens sometimes. It just makes the drive to beat your sister and competitor that much stronger." Freiberger added, "I feel that being able to train and race with my sister all these years has made me a stronger person mentally and physically as a competitor."

"For me, I know without Britney, my twin, I wouldn't be the athlete I am today," Courtney Freiberger said. "She's always pushed me to do better, to train harder. She's my biggest supporter and biggest rival."

Junior David Neville enjoys having his younger sister, Stephanie on the team. The two are sprinters from Merrillville, Ind. "I'm interested in seeing how she progresses as an athlete," Neville said. "It's also nice just to be in the presence of family all the time."

Other members of the Hoosier track and field program also enjoy the company of their family. Head coach Randy Heisler's daughter, senior Lindsey Heisler competes in outdoor throwing events for the Hoosiers. An accomplished javelin thrower, she competed in the discus for the first time in her career at the 2005 Indiana Relays. Distance runners and twin brothers, Sean and John Jefferson have both been very successful at IU. Last year, the Delray Beach, Fla. natives broke a four-minute mile together at the Meyo Classic.
