Hoosiers Take First at Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Both the men's and women's Indiana track and field teams were winners on Saturday at the Carle/Health Alliance Meet at the University of Illinois' Armory Track. The IU women totaled 178 points to beat the host Illini (156), Missouri (154) and Eastern Illinois (54). The Hoosier men racked up 180.5 points and defeated Illinois (142), Missouri (135.5) and Eastern Illinois (79) at the site of this season's Big Ten Indoor Championship.
The IU men's team had seven athletes and a relay team finish in first place. Junior Contrell Ash won the 200m dash with a time of 22.16. Junior Daniel Martin was the winner in the 400m (49.37). In the 600m, Indiana had a 1-2 finish as junior Cedric Jackson captured first (1:20.81) and sophomore Russell Hollis was right behind in second (1:21.68).
Sophomore John Jefferson placed first in the Mile with a time of 4:10.09. In the 3000m, the Hoosiers' Freshman Stephen Haas was the winner with a time of 8:23.87 while junior Chris Powers came in second (8:25.40). Junior Micah Harvey's time of 8.26 was edged by Illinois' Andre English's 8.26 in the 60m hurdles. IU won the Distance Medley Relay in 10:08.60.
Sophomore Aarik Wilson and senior Hassan Reddick captured a 1-2 finish in both the long and triple jumps. Wilson won the long jump with a mark of 7.38m and Wilson tied for second with Illinois' Josh Fournier with a mark of 7.07. In the triple, Wilson jumped a season-best 16.14m and Reddick's 15.14 was good for second.
On the women's side a total of seven first-places finishes. Senior Rachelle Boone was the winner in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash. Boone's time of 7.32 in the 60m is just shy of the 7.30 NCAA Automatic qualifying time. The mark also set an Armory Track record.
Fellow senior Danielle Carruthers turned in a pair of second-place finishes in the 60m hurdles (8.16) and the 200-meter dash (24.90). Carruthers ran an NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 8.16 in the 60m hurdles. Sophomore Ara Towns came in third in the 200m (25.16) and sophomore Karla Marshall (25.60) was fifth.
Sophomore Mindy Peterson ran a 4:56.12 Mile to win the event. The Hoosiers also swept in the throws events. Freshman Andrea Dalla Rosa's toss of 14.91m in the shot put was good for first-place and senior Kelley McKinney picked up the win in the 201b. Weight Throw with a distance of 17.88m.
Junior Jennifer Cobbina placed first in the long jump (5.70m) and junior Lauren Chesnut finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.58m. Sophomore Emily Tharpe pole vaulted 3.80m to take first. The Hoosier 4x400 Relay team of Jessica Comfort, Towns, LaDonna Ray and Boone won with a time of 3:52.39.
Freshman Jean Schaffer placed second in the high jump (1.70m) and junior Audrey Geisler was second in the 3000m (10:03.38). Comfort was also a second-place finisher in the 400m with a time of 58.38.
