    THREE HOOSIERS QUALIFY FOR THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

    Upcoming Meet Information: Freshman Greg Yeldell, junior Kurt Krick, and freshman Raheem Ellis will compete at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis March 5-6.

    Current Rankings: Ellis enters the 200m championships ranked 12th at 21.31, Yeldell is 10th in the triple jump at 15.78m, and Krick is 5th in the shot put at 18.99m.

    Last Meet: ThreeIndiana University track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships next weekend at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. For the men, freshman Raheem Ellis (Paducah, Ky./Tilghman) has the country's 12th best time in the 200m at 21.31. Junior Kurt Krick (Ossian, Ind./Norwell), in the 35lb weight throw , has the fifth-longest throw of the season at 18.99m. Triple jumper Greg Yeldell (East Spencer, N.C./North Rowan), a freshman, as the 10th longest mark in the country at 15.78m.

    Next Meet: The Hoosiers that qualify will go to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana, Friday and Saturday March 5-6.

    The Track is Open for Qualifying: Junior Russell Brooks and freshman Raheem Ellis have both put up NCAA provisional marks in the sprints. Brooks is 26th in NCAA Division one in the 60m dash with a time of 6.72 seconds. Ellis is 34th in the 60m dash at 6.74 seconds and ranks 11th in the 200m dash at 21.31 seconds.

    Going the Distance: Senior Tom Chorny ran the 3000m in 8:06.91 at the Indiana Invitational. That places him 20th in the NCAA this year and is a provisional qualifying mark.

    Belly Up To The Bar: Senior Jeremy Rochford flew over the bar at 2.16m (7-1) in the high jump for the third straight meet. Rochford's leap is an NCAA provisional mark and ties him for 23rd in the nation.

    Throwing The Weight Around: Junior Kurt Krick just keeps finding more distancewith the shot put. Krick threw a personal best 18.99m (62-3 3/4) against Purdue. That places him fifth in the nation with just one weekend remaining before the NCAA Championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis March 5-6. Krick also won his second Big Ten Inddor Shot Put Championships with a throw of 18.18m (59-7 3/4).

    Looking Through the IU Record Book: Several Hoosiers have moved into the top-five in the IU record book this year. Junior Kurt Krick has improved his position to second on the school's shot put list at 18.99m. That is just 0.13m off the school record held by Nathan Davis, who reached 19.12m at the 1996 Big Ten Championships. Krick is also second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.94m. Freshman Raheem Ellis is already third on IU's 200m dash list at 21.31. The record is 21.22 by Gary Gooden at the Hoosier Hills in 1988. Senior Jeremy Rochford's high jump mark of 2.16m is tied for fifth at IU and falls nine centimeters short of the record set by Ron Jones in 1984. Freshman Greg Yeldell is already making an impact in the triple jump and has moved into fourth at 15.78m (51-9 1/4)

    Instant Impact: Freshman Greg Yeldell, Raheem Ellis, and Ryan Huber have proved they can compete with the veterans. Yeldell finished third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in the triple jump with a personal best 15.78m (51-9 1/4). Ellis won the Big Ten Indoor Championship in the 200m (21.42) and finished third in the 60m (6.80) Ellis has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 60m (6.74) and the 200m (21.31). Huber started the season with a 200m victory at the Michigan Quadrangular (22.82) and has also recorded the sixth best time ever at IU in the 600m run (1:20.79) at the Indiana Invitational. Ellis and Yeldell also made the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 200m and triple jump, respectively.

    Dan Billish: 800m - won the Indiana Invitational in 1:55:32.

    Distance Medley Relay - ran the 800m for the Big Ten Inddor Championship team (9:54.01).

    Russell Brooks: 60m -ran a 6.74 to win the Indiana USA Track & Field Championship...third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a time of 6.80...won vs. Purdue in 6.82...top collegiate at the Indiana Invitational with a 6.78...finished second with an NCAA provisional mark of 6.72 in the Tenn./Ohio State meet...set the UM Track Building record by winning the Michigan Quadrangular in 6.85.

    200m -won the Indiana USA Track & Field Championship in 21.79...Big Ten Indoor Champion (21.42)...won the 200m race in the Tennessee/Ohio State meet in 21.60.

    Tom Chorny: Mile - won against Tennessee and Ohio State with a time 4:09.02.

    3000m - placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships in 8:21.27...set a meet record 8:16.05 at Notre Dame...first at the Michigan Quadrangular by finishing in 8:21.10.

    5000m - eighth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a season best 14:33.48.

    Sean Cleary: 600m - won vs. Purdue with a personal best 1:21.82

    4x400m relay - ran the third leg for the team that finished seventh at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in 3:18.32

    Trent Davis: 400m - ran a meet record and personal best 48.47 at Notre Dame.

    Distance Medley Relay - ran the 400m for the Big Ten Inddor Championship team (9:54.01).

    Raheem Ellis: 60m - finished third with a 6.80 at the Big Ten Indoor Championships...ran a 6.74 to finish third and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in the Ohio State/Tennessee meet.

    200m - won the Big Ten Indoor Championships in 21.42...ran his personal best and won with the 11th best collegiate time in the nation this year (21.31) vs. Purdue...outran the field at the Indiana Invitational with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.78.

    Chris Ekman: 800m - finished second at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in 1:53.10.

    Brian Garriotte: Pole Vault - top collegiate at the USA Track & Field Championships with a mark of 4.86m (15-11 1/4)...topped the Indiana Invitational field by clearing 4.90m (16-0 3/4).

    Brad Griggs: 600m - won at the Michigan Quad with a time of 1:20.72, which was the fourth best mark in IU history.

    Ryan Huber: 600m - won at the Indiana Invitational in 1:20.79, which is the sixth best time in IU history.

    4x400m relay - ran the first leg for the team that finished seventh at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in 3:18.32

    Kurt Krick: Shot Put - won the Indiana USA Track & Field Championship with a mark of 18.78m (61-7 1/2)...repeated as Big Ten Indoor Champion with a mark of 18.18m (59-7 3/4)...threw the fourth best throw in the NCAA this year at 18.99m (62-3 3/4) vs. Purdue...dominating winner at the Indiana Invitational with a shot of 18.48m (60-7 1/2)...won at Notre Dame (17.79m; 58-4 1/2)...won at the Michigan Quadrangular with a distance of 18.01m (60-1 1/4).

    35 lb. wt. throw - threw a personal best 16.94m (55-7) against Purdue.

    Jon Lange: High Jump - cleared 2.14m (7-0 1/4) to tie for fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

    Nick Sears: 60m Hurdles - ran an 8.21 to tie for fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships...won at Notre Dame in 8.31.

    Mikko Simos: 800m - ran a personal best 1:50.72 to win the Indiana USA Track & Field Championship...won the Purdue meet with a personal best 1:51.33.

    Jeremy Rochford: High Jump - cleared 2.14m (7-0 1/4) to tie for fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships...reached 2.16m (7-1) for the fourth time and won versus Purdue...won at the Indiana Invite by clearing 2.16m (7-1) for the third time this season...reached 2.16m (7-1) for the second consecutive meet to win the Indiana Invitational...cleared a meet record 2.16m (7-1) at Notre Dame...Michigan Quadrangular champion after clearing 2.08m (6-9 3/4).

    Greg Yeldell: Long Jump - Michigan Quadrangular winner with a leap of 7.26m (23-10).

    Triple Jump - reached a personal best 15.78m (51-9 1/4) to finish third at the Big Ten Indoor Championship and move into fourth on IU's all-time list...set a meet record 14.95m (49-0 3/4) at Notre Dame...out-distanced the competitors from Ohio State and Tennessee by jumping 14.96m (49-1)...second at the Michigan Quadrangular with a distance of 15.40m (50-6 1/4), fifth best ever at IU.
