Day 1 of Alex Wilson Invitational
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Across the nation men and women's track and field programs are focused on the NCAA Championship. With that in mind Indiana sent four athletes to the "last chance" 2003 Alex Wilson Invitational in the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame campus to improve their qualification times, or to post their first qualification before the NCAA Championships.
Representing the men's team in the Weight Throw competition for Indiana was freshman Wil Fleming. Fleming, who posted a personal-best throw at the Big Ten Championships in Illinois on March 2, was unable to continue his throwing streak, faulting on his attempts.
Three Hoosier women traveled to the Alex Wilson Invitational. Senior and Bloomington, Ind., native Kelley McKinney competed in the Weight Throw event as sophomore Abigail Paul and junior Ellison Tipton competed in the Pole Vault.
Paul tied her Feb. 7 Illinois Health Alliance Classic and March 1 Big Ten Championship personal-best mark of 3.50m (11-05.75), good enough for placing ninth overall in the Pole Vault event. Tipton placed 15th in the same competition with a mark of 3.35m (10-11.75). McKinney came in 11th in the Weight Throw event with a throw of 16.35m (53-07.75). Unfortunately the Hoosiers were unable to post NCAA provisional or qualifying marks in tonight's competition.
The Hoosiers are back in action Saturday, March 8, to wrap up the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. In addition, some Hoosiers athletes will be competing in the Iowa State "last chance" meet at Lied Recreation Facility in Ames, Iowa.
