Coover Named Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The National Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the regional and national athletes of the year on Thursday. Indiana junior Jeff Coover garnered the Field Athlete of the Year Honor for the Great Lakes Region. The La Jolla, Calif., native will compete in the pole vault on Friday as the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships begin competition.
Indiana director and head coach Ron Helmer said that Coover earned the award by competing at a high level from start to finish over the course of the season.
“Jeff was appropriately recognized by the coaches in our region for both his outstanding performance this season and his incredible consistency,” Helmer said.
Coover has won three major championships this season, taking the Meyo Invitational crown, the Tyson Invitational title and the Big Ten Championship. His season-best clearance of 5.45m () is the fourth-best all-time at Indiana. His dynamic season has put him among the best in the storied history of pole vaulting at Indiana.
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships open on Friday. In action for the Hoosiers on day one will be Coover in the pole vault (begins at 5:30 p.m. ET), junior Molly Beckwith in the prelims of the 800m run (begins at 7:00 p.m. ET), junior Wendi Robinson in the 5,000m run (begins at 8:05 p.m. ET) and the distance medley relay team of seniors Evan Bardach and John Gunnell and sophomores Ben Hubers and De’Sean Turner (begins at 10:35 p.m. ET).
