March 27, 1999 HOOSIERS START OUTDOOR AT BALDY CASTILLO
Tuscon, Arizona -- The Hoosier Track team started the outdoor season at the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Arizona State University Friday and Saturday.
Freshman Raheem Ellis ran a 10.55 to take fifth in the 100m and placed fourth in the 200m with a time of 21.31. Junior Russell Brooks took sixth in the 100m at 10.63. Junior Nick Sears finished fifth in the 110m hurdles in 15.23 and eighth in the 400m intermediate hurdles at 56.10. Freshman Ryan Huber started his career with an eighth place finish in the 400m hurdles (56.10).
In the distance events, junior Chris Ekman and sophomore Mikko Simos finished sixth (1:52.20) and eighth (1:52.56) in the 800m, respectively. Simos also ran a 3:51.1 to finish eighth in the 1,500m. Sophomore Aaron Gillen was also an eighth place finisher, his in the 5,000m (14:34.31).
In the field, junior Kurt Krick took care of business, winning the shot put with a throw of 17.78m (58-4) and finishing second in the hammer throw (56.62m; 185-9). Senior Jeremy Rochford cleared 1.98m (6-6) to finish fifth in the high jump. Sophomore Brian Garriotte took ninth in the pole vault (4.70m; 15-5). Freshman Greg Yeldell finished second in the triple jump (15.37m; 50-5 1/4) and sixth in the long jump (7.18m; 23-6 3/4). Fellow freshman Dino Efthimiou grabbed seventh in the long jump at 7.09m (23-3 1/4).
