BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--In the opening day of the second annual Indiana Relays, the weather cooperated and the Indiana track and field team put forth a solid overall effort in its first home meet of the outdoor season. After one full day of competition, the Hoosiers sit in second place with 85 points as four Hoosiers captured first-place honors in their respective events. Army leads the way with 100 points and Central Michigan is in third with 40 points.
Aarik Wilson picked up where he left off during his championship run during the indoor season as he blew away the competition in the long jump taking a first-place finish with a leap of 7.21m (23-08.00). Also in the long jump, freshmen Kyle Jenkins took second (6.79m/22-03.50), Tyler Skelton placed fourth (6.55m/21-06.00) and George Tembon came in seventh (5.95m/19-06.25).
Sophomores Stephanos Ioannou and David Neville won the 110m hurdle and 400m crowns, respectively as Ioannou ran a 14.37 and Neville clocked in at 47.63. Senior Rodney Hollis started the outdoor season off on the right foot as well, finishing first in the 800m with a time of 1:51.69.
In the throwing events, Ryan Ketchum had a busy night as he competed in the hammer and the shot put. Ketchum earned a regional qualifying mark in the shot put with a mark of 17.64m (58-01.00) en route to a second-place finish. In the hammer, he captured fourth place after heaving a personal best mark of 51.54m (169-01.00). Jimmy Conrad also competed in the hammer event and took a ninth-place finish with a mark of 44.33m (145-05.00).
Competition will resume tomorrow with the first event, the men's javelin set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
