IU HOSTS INDIANA RELAYS
The Indiana track and field team will host its first meet of the 2006 outdoor season, the third annual Indiana Relays on April 7-8. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m., on Friday with action beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The 2006 Indiana Relays will pit the Hoosiers against Indianapolis, Butler, Louisville, Bellarmine, and Vanderbilt, and numerous high schools will also be in attendance.
DIET PEPSI INVITE RECAP
Two Hoosiers and a relay team claimed titles at Diet Pepsi Invite in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday, April 1. Seniors Ryan Ketchum and Wil Fleming took home top honors in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively. Ketchum tossed a mark of 18.34m, while Fleming won his event with a heave of 63.84m. Both marks met the NCAA regional qualifying standard. In addition, the men's 4x400m relay team capped off the day with a first-place finish after crossing the line in 3:09.14. The relay consisted of Ryan Smith, Trey Warfield, John Gunnell and Doug Dayhoff.
On the women's side, Candace Perry turned in the best finish for the Hoosiers, as she leaped to a fourth-place finish in the long jump after reaching 5.95m. Lindsey Heisler was the next best finishers, claiming a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 38.42m, which was a new personal best.
STANFORD INVITE RECAP
Four of five IU women's distance runners met the regional qualifying standard at the prestigious Stanford Invite on Friday, March 31. Jessica Gall blazed to an impressive time of 16:16.50 in the 5,000m, which ranks second in the IU record books. Wendi Robinson also competed in the 5,000m, and finished in 16:48.71. In the 10,000m Lindsay Hattendorf recorded a new personal best with a time of 34:25.97, which is third all-time. Finally, Kelly Siefker regionally qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase after finishing in 10:29.15.
OFF TO A GOOD START
In the first week of outdoor competition, seven Hoosiers and a relay team met the NCAA regional qualifying standard in their respective events. The list after week one of the outdoor season is as follows: For the men, Wil Fleming (Hammer Throw), Kyle Jenkins (Triple Jump), Ryan Ketchum (Shot Put and Discus) and the Indiana "A" 4x400m relay team (Smith, Warfield, Dayhoff, Gunnell). On the women's side the list is: Jessica Gall (5,000m), Lindsay Hattendorf (10,000m), Wendi Robinson (5,000m), Kelly Siefker (3,000m steeplechase.)
PUT IT IN THE BOOKS
At the Stanford Invitational on March 31, two IU women's distance runners etched their names into the Indiana record books. Jessica Gall clocked in a 16:16.50 in the 5,000m, which ranks second-all time, while Lindsay Hattendorf ran the school's third fastest time in the 10,000 with a time of 34:27.95.
Indiana will hit the road again for away meets, as the distance runners will compete in the presitgious Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the rest of the IU team will head to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Both meets are April 14-15.
