S. Jefferson Breaks Record (4-18-03)
WALNUT, Calif. - The Indiana men's track and field team turned in an impressive showing at the Mt. Sac Relays Thursday evening. Five Hoosier distance runners competed in either the 5000m or 10000m events.
Appearing in his first collegiate outdoor track 5000m race, redshirt freshman Sean Jefferson finished with the best time by a first-year runner in school history - 13:58.23. More impressively, he is the sixth IU runner to break 14 minutes for 5K, and three of those athletes - Bob Kennedy, Jim Spivey and Terry Brahm - also competed in the Olympics.
"I'm really happy for Sean," assistant track and head cross country coach Robert Chapman said. "To do that well in his first collegiate track 5K is impressive. He ran a really strong race."
Jefferson's performance qualifies him for the NCAA Mideast Region meet May 30-31 in Columbus, Ohio. Jefferson will be joined in that 5000m race by Stephen Haas (14:20.37) and Chris Powers (14:22.46). Haas' and Powers' finish is a personal best for each runner.
Chad Andrews finished ninth in the 10000m (30:09.22), while Bart Phariss was 22nd at 30:26.59.
