Drake Relays/Penn Relays - Day 1 Recap (4-24-03)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- The No. 12 Indiana women and No. 15 Indiana men's track and field teams opened the weekend at two of the most prestigious meets in the nation. The Hoosiers sent some athletes to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and some to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
Tom Burns turned in the most impressive performance of the day, finishing second in the 3000m steeplechase at 8:50.2. Burns entered the week with the sixth-best time in the region and 22nd-best in the nation (9:00.27). Burns' 8:50.2 ties the fourth-best performance in school history.
While IU assistant track coach and head cross country coach Robert Chapman is pleased with his runners' progress, he is also weary of starting out too quickly.
"We're hot right now, running extremely well," he said. "The challenge is maintaining this and building upon it for the next five weeks."
The women's All-American 4x100m relay team of Rachelle Boone, Danielle Carruthers, Ara Towns and Rose Richmond qualified for Friday's championship with a second-place heat finish of 44.51. IU's relay tied with LSU for the second-best preliminary time. Auburn had the top time at 44.47. Entering this week, LSU and Auburn owned the first and fourth-best 4x100 relay times in the nation, respectively.
The women's 4x400 relay of Chioma Ndubisi, LaDonna Ray, Charlene Maddox and Kristin Kallner finished fourth in their heat with a time of 3:46.56. Freshman Andrea DallaRosa threw a season-best 14.92m/48-11.5 in the shot put to finish fifth.
Junior Audrey Giesler finished third in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal-best 10:25.90. Giesler entered the week with a 3000m steeplechase time of 10:32.33, ranked fourth regionally and 16th nationally. The 10:25.90 ranks among the top 10 in the nation.
At the Drake Relays, Jake Wiseman finished fourth in the decathlon with 6593 points. He ran an 11.37 100m, long-jumped 21-2, threw the shot 39-6.5 and high-jumped 5-10 for a first day total of 3398. In day 2, Wiseman ran a16.2 110m high hurdles, threw the discus 112-5, went 14-9 in the pole vault, threw the javelin 188-0 and ran a 5:18.20 mile.
