Jefferson Tabbed Big Ten Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana track and field senior John Jefferson earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending May 7, the conference announced.
In a tuneup for the upcoming Big Ten Championships Jefferson led the Hoosiers to a successful showing at the 28th-annual Billy Hayes Invitational on May 5 in Bloomington. Jefferson turned in a first-place time of 3:41.96 in the 1,500m invitational. Additionally, the Delray Beach, Fla., product met the Mideast Regional standard (3:47.80) in the event.
Jefferson's time moved him into second in the conference standings, second in the regional standings and sixth in the national standings.
This is the second honor of Jefferson's outdoor track career. He also received the honor on April 21, 2003 after setting his personal-best mark in the 1,500m (3:41.53) at the Mt. Sac Relays. Jefferson joins senior thrower Ryan Ketchum as IU's two honorees for the 2006 outdoor season. Ketchum earned the accolade on April 11 after his performance at the Indiana Relays. Ketchum met regional standards in both the shot put and discus at the Relays.
Jefferson and the Hoosiers travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2006 Big Ten Championships, May 12-14.
