Three Athletes Earn Academic All-District
Bloomington, Ind. - Three Indiana track and field athletes have been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District V University Division Men's or Women's Track and Field/Cross Country team. Junior distance runner Audrey Giesler was named to the women's first team, while junior distance runner Tom Burns and senior javelin thrower Pat Miller were selected to the men's first team.
Giesler, Burns and Miller each rank among the top 11 in the region in their respective outdoor track and field events. This trio and their Hoosier teammates head to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio May 30-31 for the NCAA Mideast Region Championships. The top five finishers in each event advance to the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif.
The men's and women's teams were voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from District V, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To qualify for consideration, student athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
Giesler has been one of the top performers in the Big Ten in both track and cross country. In outdoor track, she set the Big Ten 3000m steeplechase record (10:14.19) and currently ranks second in the region in that event. Her performance at Big Tens also qualifies her for the USA Track and Field Championships June 19-22 in Stanford, Calif. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree also won IU's Tichenor Medal, awarded to the female student-athlete with the top grade point average. A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Giesler was IU's top finisher at the 2002 Big Ten cross country meet, taking sixth overall . She finished 14th at the Great Lakes Regional with a time of 21:46.8, and her season-best and career-best 6K performance came at the NCAA Championship, when she finished in 21:03.3.
Burns currently owns the region's eighth-best men's 3000m steeplechase time (8:50.06). This finish is also among the top four in school history. In cross country, Burns earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition and competed in every meet for the Hoosiers, scoring in each of the last four meets. The Hammond, Ind., native tied the second-best 8K performance of his career when he finished the Big Ten meet in 25:07 , and he ran the two best 10K meets of his career at the NCAA Regional in West Lafayette (31:45.9) and the NCAA Championship (31:55.2).
Miller is the Hoosiers' school record holder in the javelin (67.74/222-3) and owns four of the top five javelin performances in school history. His season-best performance of 65.22/214-0 placed third at the Big Ten Championships and is the 11th-best throw in theregion.
