Turner is Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year
June 6, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - De'Sean Turner is the USTFCCCA Track Athlete of the Year for the Great Lakes Region, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced. Turner was the Big Ten Champion in the 3,000m steeplechase, and he will compete in the event at the NCAA Championships this weekend.
Indiana director and head coach Ron Helmer said Turner's hard work is starting to pay off, and that this season could be a sign of things to come for Turner.
"De'Sean has had somewhat of a breakout season," said Helmer. "His willingness to do the work necessary to get better has been the difference. If he stays healthy and continues his work, this could just be the start of his success."
Turner took the Big Ten title as the Hoosiers went 1-2-4 in the 3,000m steeplechase, and he won his heat at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to advance to the NCAA Championships. Turner also ran on IU's 4xMile and Distance Medley relays at the Penn Relays, handing off with the lead in both.
The Hoosiers return to action at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
