Indiana University head athletics trainer Kip Smith has been to the "big stage" many times throughout his 38 years in the profession, whether it's the 14 bowl games he's experienced while working as the head football trainer for the University of Pittsburgh and Indiana University or sitting on the corner of the mat for multiple NCAA Wrestling title matches. While the spotlight is nothing new for Smith, it will shine directly on him June 28th when he formally is inducted into the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) Hall of Fame at the organization's Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia in St. Louis, Mo.

Senior wrestler Matt Powless concluded his Hoosier career Friday afternoon, racking up 124 wins in four seasons. The Powless win total is the fifth-most in Indiana University history, surpassing Coyte Cooper (2000-04) with his final victory.

Four Hoosier wrestlers begin their quest for national titles and All-America status on Thursday (March 15) as the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships get underway in St. Louis. Wrestling action begins at noon (eastern) on Thursday and runs through Saturday night's Finals starting at 7:30 p.m.

The NCAA released the brackets for the 2012 Wrestling Championships on Wednesday (March 7), and two of the four Hoosiers competing earned top-12 seeds as well. Returning All-American Matt Powless is the No. 8 seeded wrestler in the 197 pound weight class while redshirt freshman Taylor Walsh was tabbed as the No. 11 seed at 149 pounds.

In conjunction with NCAA.com and the NCAA's social media platforms, the 330 athletes participating in 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be announced on Wednesday, March 7. Indiana's Matt Powless, Ryan LeBlanc, Adam Chalfant and Taylor Walsh know they will be in the field already, having earned automatic bids based on their performances at the Big Ten Championships.

A quartet of Hoosier grapplers will make the "March to the Arch" and compete in the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 15-17. Taylor Walsh (149 lbs), Ryan LeBlanc (174 lbs), Matt Powless (197 lbs) and Adam Chalfant (285 lbs) each qualified for the national tournament with their efforts at the Big Ten Championships this weekend.

Senior Matt Powless advanced to the Big Ten Championships semifinals of the 197-pound division on Saturday, winning a pair of bouts in the morning session. While all nine Hoosiers competing remain in contention for automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, four Hoosiers are just one win away from stamping their tickets.

Postseason action for Hoosier Wrestling begins on March 3 at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Purdue University inside Mackey Arena. The conference tournament will qualify 74 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships, the most of any league in the country. The next closest conference, the EIWA, earned just 46 automatic bids to the NCAAs.

The 2011-12 regular season comes to an end Friday night (Feb. 17) for the Indiana Wrestling team (11-7), traveling to #20 Northwestern (10-4) for their final dual before postseason action starts Mar. 3-4 at the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Hoosiers and Wildcats hit the mats at 8 p.m. eastern, 7 p.m. local time in Evanston.

Seniors Matt Powless and Matt Ortega each had their hands raised on Senior Day, their last bouts ever in University Gym. Powless won a 10-7 decision over A.J. Kissel while Ortega notched a 7-2 besting of Brandon Nelsen. Purdue (8-9) took the team score, however, getting past the Hoosiers (8-7), 19-16.

Indiana Wrestling's all-time winningest coach, Duane Goldman, reached another coaching milestone Friday night; earning career victory number 250 as his Hoosiers defeated South Dakota State, 30-8, at a neutral site. Indiana would go to sweep the tri-meet hosted by SIUE, topping the Cougars in the night cap, 31-13.
