Missouri Squeezes by Hoosiers in Opening Match at National Duals, 22-18
Jan. 12, 2008
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Indiana University wrestling team began action at the National Duals early Saturday afternoon with a match-up versus Missouri. The battle between two nationally-ranked squads came down to the final match, and the Tigers came out on top, 22-18.
The Hoosiers jumped ahead 6-0 with a pair of decisions by the cousins from Griffith, Indiana, Angel Escobedo and Andrae Hernandez. Escobedo was a 10-4 winner over No. 12 Johnny Olanowski while Hernandez defeated No. 11 Tyler McCormick, 7-3, in the 133-pound match.
After Scott Kelly dropped a tight match, 3-1, at 141-pounds, redshirt freshman Kurt Kinser continued his assault on the IU record books with his 15th pin of the season. Kinser is now just five pins shy of the school record for most falls in a single season after sticking Missouri's Josh Wagner in the first period.
The next two matches went in favor of Mizzou, cutting the Hoosier lead to 12-9 heading into the 171-pound bout. Indiana's Trevor Perry added to his lofty season pin total as well, recording his tenth stick of the year. Perry was able to down Brock Wittmeyer with just 49 seconds remaining in the match to increase IU's lead to 18-9. However, Missouris responded by taking the final three individual matches for the 22-18 team win.
Indiana's next match will be Cornell in the first round of the consolation bracket. Cornell suffered a 32-3 loss to Iowa in their opening match.
