#4 Gophers Top Indiana in B1G Home Opener
Jan. 13, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University wrestling team (6-4, 0-2 Big Ten) opened the home portion of its conference schedule with a 41-3 setback against #4 Minnesota (10-1, 4-0 Big Ten). Redshirt sophomore Taylor Walsh earned a 8-7 victory at 157 pounds, topping 24th-ranked Dan Zilverberg.
Walsh, ranked 11th nationally, jumped out to a five-point lead in what would eventually become a see-saw bout. The 5-0 advantage quickly became a 6-5 deficit. Walsh then regained his edge with a reversal, going ahead 7-6. A late escape by Zilverberg evened the score at 7-7, but a two-minute-plus riding time advantage for Walsh earned the eighth and deciding point.
Preston Keiffer was ultimately on the wrong end of his bout, but not before energizing the University Gym crowd with a pair of takedowns and two near-fall points against #5 Dylan Ness. Keiffer's offensive onslaught garnered him a 6-3 lead midway through the second stanza. The Voorhees, N.J., native got in deep on a double-leg when Ness rolled over backwards and nailed Keiffer for the fall.
The Cream and Crimson returns to action Friday night (Jan. 18) for a battle with the Buckeyes at 7 pm ET.
