Top-Ranked Penn State Downs #19 Hoosiers
Jan. 17, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Taylor Walsh and Adam Chalfant each improved to 3-1 in Big Ten action with winning decisions during #19 Indiana's 36-6 defeat to #1 Penn State (9-0, 3-0). Chalfant's 9-4 victory over #10 Jimmy Lawson Friday night marked his fourth top-10 triumph of the season. Walsh, meanwhile, pulled even with teammate Ryan LeBlanc for the NCAA lead with 28 overall wins.
Chalfant bear-hugged Lawson and drove him to the mat for an opening period takedown. He then tilted the big fella, adding on three near-fall points for a 5-0 lead. His edge extended to 6-0 following an escape in the second period. Another Chalfant escape and eventual riding time point (1:04) wrapped up his 9-4 decision.
Penn State's James Vollrath scored first at 157 pounds, picking up an early takedown against Walsh. The Big Ten's instant replay system then came into play as the second look awarded Walsh a takedown after it was originally waved off.
Fearing the Walsh vice grip, Vollrath elected to start neutral for the second period rather than the conventional choice of bottom position.
The tally remained 3-2 in favor of Walsh entering the final frame. Walsh was able to break Vollrath's grasp and circle around for a reversal. Vollrath answered with a reversal of his own, closing the gap to 5-4 with 16 seconds left. Walsh ultimately held on for win number 28 of the 2013-14 campaign, however.
Indiana gets back at it again next Friday (Jan. 24), hosting Wisconsin in another Friday night home dual.
