Eight Hoosiers Place, Coughlin Wins Championship at Michigan State Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University wrestling team had eight individuals place at the Michigan State Open, including redshirt sophomore Matt Coughlin's tournament crown in the 165-pound weight class.
No. 4 Coughlin opened the tournament with an 8-3 decision over Jason Martin from Purdue. He then won by scores of 6-3 and 9-3 versus Justin Brandel (Eastern Michigan) and Obie Simpson (Kent State). In his fourth match of the day, Coughlin pinned Old Dominion's Chris Brown to advanced to the finals. The Evansville, Indiana native wasted little time getting to the top of the stand, pinning Dominic Marella from Northwestern in just under a minute at the 0:57 mark of the first period.
Two other Hoosiers reached the finals of their weight divisions as well. No. 3 Andre Hernandez, a redshirt junior, did so in the 133-pound class while sophomore Nick Walpole competed in the 149-pound championship match. Hernandez won three straight bouts before dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 10 Franklin Gomez from Michigan State.
After a first round bye, Walpole rolled in his next two matches with a pin of Kevin Lipp (Purdue) in 1:12 and a 6-0 victory over Ohio's Clay Tucker. He then had to face his teammate, Kurt Kinser in the semifinals, coming out victorious 7-3. Walpole's run finally ended with a 5-3 defeat to Kaylen Baxter of Old Dominion in the championship match. Kinser won three matches in the main draw before his loss to Walpole. The Bloomington South High School product went on to also place in the 149-pound class, finishing fifth.
A pair of Hoosiers placed in the 157-pound division as well. Two-time All-American Brandon Becker ripped off four consecutive wins in the wrestleback to captured third place. No. 8 Becker picked up a 15-1 major decision over No. 18 Chase Pami from Cal Poly en route to the wrestleback finals where he earned a 5-2 win over Andrew Howe. Redshirt freshman Paul Young was defeated by the nationally-ranked Pami in the fifth place match, 7-5.
In the 174-pound bracket, redshirt sophomore Trevor Perry tallied three first-period pins on the day in his run to a fourth place finish. Perry won his first three contests in the main draw before suffering a 10-2 defeat to No. 11 David Erwin from Penn State. He then rebounded with a 0:38 pin in his first consolation match to reach the third place showdown. Redshirt sophomore Seth Parker also competed in the 174-piound division, earning two victories, including a pin of Cal Poly's Evan Barbre.
Redshirt freshman Jantzen Minton followed the same path to the stand as Perry, advancing to the semifinals of the main draw and then winning his first consolation match to reach the third place match.
