Hoosiers Take Down Duke & Cleveland State
Nov. 17, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier Wrestling (2-0) notched a pair of dual match victories on Sunday, sweeping a home tri-meet with Duke and Cleveland State. Indiana started with a 22-15 win over the Blue Devils (1-2) and finished by topping CSU (0-2) by a final tally of 25-10.
Half of the Hoosier lineup went 2-0 individually as well, highlighted by Ryan LeBlanc's +9 in the team score with a tech fall and major decision. Eric Roach, Luke Sheridan, Adam Chalfant and Ethan Raley each triumphed in both duals as well.
Each dual started with the 149-pound bout, allowing Roach to provide IU with an early 3-0 edge in both contests. The Crown Point, Ind., native improved to 11-3 on the season, winning by the slimmest of margins with a couple of one-point wins.
Duke matched Roach's decision in the next bout, evening the score at 3-3. After LeBlanc's 9-0 blanking of Marcus Cain regained the lead for Indiana, the Blue Devils copied again by posting a major decision of their own.
The back-and-forth affair continued with Sheridan posting a 6-1 decision at 184 pounds before Duke's 197-pound tech fall gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the match, 12-10. The next two bouts were split as well, heavyweight ending in a 10-4 Chalfant decision and 125-pounds going in favor of Duke by the same 10-4 tally.
Duke's 133-pounder suffered an injury at Purdue on Saturday, forcing a forfeit. Indiana then added three more points via Raley's 5-2 decision in the final bout.
The Cleveland State match was not as tightly contested, thanks in large part to an 11-0 surge out the gataes from Indiana. Roach's second decision was shadowed by a decision for Alex Gregory. Bumping up to 157 pounds, Gregory grinded out a 2-0 win over LaTrell Davis. LeBlanc quickly made it 11-0, dismantling Zach Frambach en route to a 16-1 tech fall concluding midway through the second period.
A one-point margin permitted CSU to get on the board, posting a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds. It was then back to business for the Cream and Crimson, seizing the next three bouts and virtually clinching the dual. Sheridan and Garret Goldman (197 lbs) started the run completed by Chalfant's 14-5 major decision pushing IU ahead 21-3. A major decision from Raley three bouts later put a bow on Indiana's 25-10 win.
