BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Hoosier Wrestling wraps up the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule this weekend, hosting the Purdue Boilermakers for Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. inside University Gym. Before the rivalry match, Indiana will hit the road to Edwardsville, Ill., for a tri-meet with SIUE and South Dakota State Friday night.
WEEKEND NOTES
Indiana leads the all-time series with each of its three opponents this weekend, including a commanding 53-32-3 edge over the rival Boilermakers. The Hoosiers have won five of the last seven meetings with Purdue and have not dropped one in Bloomington since 2003.
IU has face SIUE 25 times in school history, owning an 18-7 advantage. The most recent clash with the Cougars came earlier this season in the Hoosier Duals with Indiana coming out on top in seven of 10 bouts.
Indiana's success against South Dakota State has come in recent years as well, facing the Jackrabbits just twice (2008 and 2009). In two victories, the Cream and Crimson has outscored SDSU by a combined score of 83-9.
Sunday's showdown with Purdue could prove vital in the Hoosiers' pursuit of a third straight Smitville Crimson and Gold Cup championship. Indiana enters the weekend trailing 3.5 to 2 in the annual competition pitting the state schools against each other in a year-long battle with one point being rewarded to each sport the two institutions go head-to-head in. The Hoosiers own a 4-1-2 seasonal record since the Cup's inception back in 2004-05.
Senior Matt Powless has racked up 113 career wins, slotting him 10th all-time in school history. His next `W' will pull him even with assistant coach Joe Dubuque (2002-06) and Sam Komar (1975-78) for ninth place. Three more wins and he passes both assistants to move up into seventh as Pat DeGain racked up 115 wins in his illustrious Hoosier career. Next up would be volunteer coach Brandon Becker and his 119 triumphs which rank sixth-best in Hoosier lore.
Duane Goldman, the all-time winningest coach in school history, will reach a milestone with IU's next dual victory. It will be the 250th of his career. His career coaching record is 249-133-5 (.650).
