For the second straight year, the Indiana mens cross country team is holding its preseason training camp at Chain-O-Lakes State Park, located 30 miles northwest of Ft. Wayne.
(Senior) Kevin Chandler is from Noble County, and he suggested this as a place that might work out well, IU coach Dr. Robert Chapman said. Its a great place to have good solid training. It has some nice cabins, plenty of trails, you can go fishing. While we work hard, it also allows us to relax as well.
The team arrived at camp on Sunday and will stay until Wednesday morning.
We may have had our best run of the year on Sunday, Chapman said. Sunday is usually our long run day. Some guys went 14 miles, other go 18-20.
The team worked out twice on Monday and will do the same on Tuesday. They will get one final morning run in on Wednesday before departing around 11 a.m. The goal is to average around 10-12 miles per day.
Were pretty healthy right now, which may be the biggest surprise of camp, Chapman said. Usually, some guys are nicked up, but not this year. John Jefferson, Sean Jefferson, Stephen Haas, Eric Redman those are some young guys who will be pivotal for us this fall. We have to find the right balance between getting them in condition without overworking them.
The Hoosiers open the 2002 season Friday at the IU Open, a meet that Chapman says begins his teams quest for the Big Ten Championships, NCAA Regional, and hopefully, the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute.
Were a long way from November, so we have to take each meet until then as a tune-up for those three big meets.
