Bloomington, IN - The Indiana men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2003 cross country season in impressive fashion at the Indiana Open Friday afternoon at the IU Cross Country Course. Despite substantial thunderstorms, the Hoosier women took seven of the top 10 places en route to a first place team finish at 22 points. The Indiana men saw two of its redshirt freshmen, Marcus Aguilar and Nick Kruse, finish among the top 10 in the men's race. There was no team scoring in the men's race since some of the Hoosier runners competed unattached. According to Big Ten Conference rules, any league team that has an athlete compete unattached means that the meet cannot be scored.

Last season, Audrey Giesler was named all-league in cross country, won the Big Ten outdoor track 3000m steeplechase title and advanced to the NCAA Championships. On Friday, the senior picked up where she left off, taking second in the women's 5K at 18:13.67. This is nearly two seconds better than her time at last year's Indiana Open and is the third-best 5K time of her career. Giesler finished behind South Florida's Christa Benton, who was 40th at last year's NCAA Championship.

Sophomore Lindsay Hattendorf also had a memorable outing, as her third-place finish of 18:42.66 is also the second-best 5K effort of her young career. Junior Mindy Peterson was fourth at 18:45.19, freshman Kristen Whitezell was fifth at 19:00.61 and Julie Shields was eighth in 19:24.40 to round out the Hoosier scoring.

Competing in his first collegiate race (7K), Aguilar was the top Indiana men's finisher at 23:19.84, while Matt Sweetman took ninth at 23:48 and Kruse took 10th at 23:48.97. Kurtis George was 16th at 24:13 and senior Jeff Zeha was 30th at 25:15.

Indiana returns to action at the Cream and Crimson Open on Sept. 12.
