HOOSIERS HEAD TO GEORGE MASON
After taking some time off, the Indiana men's cross country team gets back into action this weekend when it travels to the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30. The 8K race, held at Bull Run Regional Park in Manassas, Va., is slated to begin at 10:45 a.m. (ET).
PLOTNER LEADS PACK AT IU OPEN
In the Hoosiers last time on the course, sophomore Brennon Plotner took first at the IU Open on Sept. 9, running a career-best 26:32, placing ninth overall. Also finishing for Indiana were freshmen Darryl Stevenson (25.51, 12th), Tom Martin (27.14, 17th), Tyler McCreary (27:39, 23rd) and sophomore Paul Coover who ran in a time of 28:02 for 26th place.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
Following IU's trip to George Mason, the Hoosiers will head to Pre-NCAA's on Saturday, Oct. 14. The meet is hosted by Indiana State on the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., home of the 2006 NCAA Championships.
IU COMMUNITY 5K A SUCCESS, PLOTNER FINISHES AS TOP HOOSIER
The annual IU Community 5K meet gave anyone from the community a chance to run with the Hoosiers and take their shot on one of the most difficult cross country courses in the state on Sept. 1. Among the 75 participants, redshirt junior Brennon Plotner finished as the top Hoosier in the combined race with a time of 16:45. He was followed by redshirt freshman Tom Martin (16:49), sophomore Tim McLeod (16:53), redshirt freshman Darryl Stevenson (16:56) and sophomore Tyler McCreary (18:56).
IU TO HOST BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the first time in 10 years, the IU Cross Country Championship Course will be the site of the Big Ten Championships, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29. The men's 8K race is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. The Hoosiers placed sixth at last season's Big Ten Championships with Sean Jefferson leading the way for IU with a fifth-place finish.
AGUILAR BACK FOR FINAL SEASON AS A HOOSIER
Marcus Aguilar returns to the Hoosier line-up as IU's top runner and lone senior. The Martinsville, Ind., native product took 47th last season at the Big Ten Championships and 44th overall at the NCAA regional. Aguilar was Indiana's third-highest finisher at the NCAA meet behind former Hoosiers Sean Jefferson and Stephen Haas. Aguilar posted a career-best time of 23:19.84 during the 2003 season at the Indiana Open 8K. He ran his fastest 10K time last season after he crossed the finish line in 32:05.00 at the NCAA Championships.
QUALIFYING FOR NCAA'S
Collegiate teams automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships based on their team finishes in their regional held Sat., Nov. 11. The top two men's and women's teams from each of the nation's nine regions and top four individuals from non-qualifying teams in each regional automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind., at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. Besides the automatic qualifiers, another 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals will be added to the 31-team, 255-runner men's and women's fields on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 12 by the NCAA Championships selection committee. At-large team selection criteria (in order of priority) is based on teams' regional placings, number of wins against fellow NCAA team qualifiers, head-to-head records against other potential NCAA qualifiers, and records against common opponents.
