BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Andy Bayer is the Big Ten Runner of the Week, the conference announced. Bayer finished second at the adidas Invitational on Sat., Oct. 2. He led Indiana to an impressive victory over a highly-ranked field of teams, which led to Indiana ascending to No. 7 in the national rankings this week. Bayer wins his second career weekly honor for cross country.

Indiana director and head coach Ron Helmer said Bayer is very deserving and led the Hoosiers in an impressive team effort.

"We had a great team performance on the men's side," said Helmer. "Andy led the way for us and is very deserving of this award. It is exciting to be around the group of talented student-athletes we have on this team."

The men's team ran to an impressive win over a highly-ranked field of opponents at the adidas Invitational, including No. 6 Wisconsin. The Hoosier men won with a score of 43, which was 32 better than the 11-time defending Big Ten Champion Badgers. The Hoosiers were led by second- and third-place finishes from Bayer and Andrew Poore, respectively.

The IU men, entering the meet ranked No. 25 by the USTFCCCA, also defeated No. 23 Princeton, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 20 Providence and No. 18 Michigan State. Indiana's win is also impressive as it took place on the same course that will host the Big Ten Championships this season on Oct. 31. Bayer took second in 23:30 and Poore was third in 23:31. De'Sean Turner took eighth in 23:47 and Zach Mayhew was 10th in 23:52. Ben Hubers wrapped up the IU top five in 20th (24:01).
