A Look Back to...1975

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Thirty years ago, the Indiana men's cross country team had a very successful season by winning the Big State Meet at Purdue, taking third in the Big Ten Championships and District 4 Championships and placing 17th at the NCAA Championships.
The Hoosiers started off the season winning their first meet against Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. They then placed second at the Indiana Invitational where they hosted 18 teams. IU also hosted a "double dual" beating the Quantico Marines, 22-35, but losing to Penn State, 27-28.
IU then traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., where it easily won the Big State Meet, beating second-place Ball State, 29-54. Purdue came in third with 70 points. After the Big State Meet, Indiana traveled to Madison, Wis., for the Big Ten Championships. IU took third place with a score of 73, just behind Michigan (41) and Wisconsin (70).
After the Big Ten Championships the Hoosiers once again faced Michigan and Wisconsin, but this time is was at the District 4 Championships in Bloomington, Ind. Again, IU came in third place with 81 points. Wisconsin finished first overall this time with 53 points, while Michigan came in second with 80.
The third-place finish at the District Championships was good enough for IU to qualify for the NCAA Championships, their fifth trip under head coach Sam Bell, who coached at IU from 1969-97.
UTEP won the NCAA Championships with 88 points. Indiana came in 17th with a score of 381. Bill Foley was Indiana's top finisher in 52nd place completing the 10K race at State College, Pa., in 29:49.
