October 16, 1999 STANFORD WINS WOMEN'S PRE-NCAA MEET, IU PLACES 26th
Bloomington, Ind.- With a beautiful and sunny day at Indiana University, Stanford won the Pre-NCAA meet held at the IU Cross Country Course with 77 points. The Hoosiers finished the race in 26th place with 563 points.
Finishing in first place with a time of 17:07 was senior Kara Wheeler from Colorado. " My coach told us that the key to today's race would be patience and using the down hills. I really didn't have a big race planned. I just wanted to make sure that I was patient and adjusted accordingly to the other runners. I love this course. Being from Minnesota I can relate to this atmosphere. I was out last year with an injury but it is good to be back. " said Wheeler. Stanford had three runners in the top 20 of the race. In second place with a time of 17:08.2 was Erin Sullivan for Stanford. In seventh place for Stanford was Lauren Fleshman with a time of 17:28.9. And coming in 13th place for the Cardinals was Sally Glynn with a time of 17:40.9.
IU's top finisher was freshman Amanda Bell who finished in 69th place with a time of 18:22. The Hoosiers placed twenty-sixth with 563 points. Next was senior Monica Hostetler in 72nd place with a time of 18:23. Freshman Allyson Hammond came in 115th place with a time of 18:45.3.
"I thought that Monica Hostetler ran real well. She improved her time from 18:46 to 18:23 since the last time she was here. Allyson Hammond also improved her time from 19:06 since the last time. Generally, we did better. However, when you have an individual like Amanda Bell who does not have a good race, we are not going to be way up where we expect to be," said Indiana Head Coach Judy Bogenschutz.
Indiana will travel to Penn State on October 30 to compete in the Big
Ten Championships. The next home meet will be on November 22 when the Hoosiers
host the NCAA Championships.
