Hoosiers Make Strides in Great Lakes Region Rankings
Oct. 20, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Following impressive performances at the Pre-Nationals Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Oct. 18, the Indiana men's and women's cross country teams made great strides in this week's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional poll this week.
On the men's side, the Hoosiers moved up to No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region ranking, behind Wisconsin (No. 1 in the region and No. 5 nationally) and Michigan (No. 2 in the region and No. 9 nationally). The Hoosiers were ranked fourth in last week's poll.
Redshirt senior Brennon Plotner paced the men's squad to an eighth place finish among 40 teams competing in the Pre-Nationals 8K White Race. Saturday's race was a hopeful preview of the NCAA Championships, which will take place on the same course, where the Hoosiers bested No. 3 Colorado (9th), No. 11 Iowa State (10th) and No. 30 Michigan State (14th). Indiana was the top Big Ten team in the White race with it's finish and score of 219 points, and the second-best Big Ten team between the two races (No. 9 Michigan - 3rd/146 pts.). Plotner set the tone for the Hoosiers leading the close pack with a personal-best time of 24:10.9 (30th/267).
The women's team made a dramatic leap from 12th in last week's region poll to 4th in this week's poll. The Hoosiers made huge strides at Pre-Nationals as IU placed 14th among 41 teams in the women's Blue 6K race, thanks in part to an impressive effort by redshirt junior Wendi Robinson. Robinson paced the Hoosiers with a personal-best 20:52.5 to finish 23rd overall in a field of 278 runners. The Hoosiers also outran No. 18 NC State (32nd) in their impressive outing.
Indiana's next challenge will be the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 2 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
