BELL NAMED TO WOMEN'S ALL-BIG TEN FIRST TEAM
November 11, 1999 BELL NAMED TO WOMEN'S ALL-BIG TEN FIRST TEAM
Bloomington, IN- Indiana University Cross Country runner freshman Amanda Bell was named to the women's All-Big Ten Cross Country First Team this week.
Not only was Bell named Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week on October 13 by the Big Ten, but she currently holds the top time for the Hoosiers in the 5K this season with a time of 17:30.6. Bell, from Clarskville, Indiana, has finished first for IU six times this seasons including the Murray Keating Invitational, the Indiana Open, the Indiana Intercollegiate, Sam Bell Invitational, the Pre-NCAA meet and the Big Ten Championships.
"Amanda really gets out on the course and races up to her capability. She is the type of runner that will give 95% of her ability each race," commented Women's Head Coach Judy Bogenschutz. "It has been key for us this year having Amanda train well and staying healthy. I haven't had to worry about the transition from high school to Division I. I owe a lot of this to good high school coaches. It seems that all of the girls that we recruited had some quality coaches in high school. Talking with coaches you can get an idea of their style and teaching methods. Their philosophies are similar to mine. Overall, I am very pleased and happy for Amanda and her accomplishments."
" Coach Bogenschutz told me how proud she was of me. It is a great accomplishment only being a freshman and named to the First Team," says Bell. "I can only go up from here. It gives me a lot of confidence going into Regionals this Saturday and qualifying. It really has been a great season and I have adjusted well to college and competing. As I look towards Saturday, I hope to place in the top five. I think that we have a good shot at placing and going to Nationals. We are looking forward to the race."
Indiana will host the NCAA Championships at the IU Cross Country Course on November 22. The women's section will begin at 12:15 p.m.
