Top Signees From Florida and North Carolina to Contribute to the Strong Base That the Indiana Crew Has Helped Build for Indiana Mens Cross Country
Bloomington, Ind.--Through 1998-1999, IU mens head cross country coach Robert Chapman signed a group of ten of the top athletes in Indiana to the roster for his team. Their boost put Indiana in their first NCAA Cross Country Championships team qualification since 1987 where they took 17th among the top 31 teams in the country.
Chapman is at it again in 2000 and the three recruits, two twin brothers from Florida and one athlete from North Carolina, will contribute to the amazing improvement made in two seasons brought about by the greater depth of talent spread across the board. Prep information is as follows:
Stephen Haas (Huntersville, NC - North Mecklinburg HS):
Junior year: 11th at the Foot Locker XC Nationals (#3 returning), 2nd at North Carolina HS state meet in the 1600m in 4:12.90. Placed third at the Texas Relays running 9:11.30
Senior year: Won the North Carolina State XC meet in 15:08. His high school is currently ranked #3 in the nation by xctrack.com and #5 in the nation by Harrier Magazine.
John Jefferson (Delray Beach, FL - Atlantic Delray HS) (twin brother is Sean Jefferson):
Sophomore year: placed 2nd in the Florida state HS XC meet, and 2nd in the Florida state meet 1600m
Junior year: placed 3rd at the Florida State HS XC meet, placed 29th at Foot Locker XC Nationals (#7 returning). Placed 2nd in the Florida state meet 1600m. Ran 4:10.66 for a full mile at the Herbster classic, which makes him the #7 returning miler in the nation.
Senior year: Team ranked #7 in the nation by xctrack.com and #16 by the Harrier magazine; finished 2nd at the Florida State meet with a three mile time of 15:02.41 to lead team to State title.
Sean Jefferson (Delray Beach, FL - Atlantic Delray HS):
Sophomore year: 3rd at Florida state XC meet
Junior year: 2nd at Florida state XC meet, placed 31st at the Foot Locker national XC championships (#9 returning). Was the Florida state 3200m champion, running 9:13.52, which is a state meet record.
Senior year: Team ranked #7 in the nation by xctrack.com and #16 by the Harrier magazine; finished 3rd at the Florida State meet with a three mile time of 15:08.72 to lead team to State title.
