BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Three Indiana student-athletes have been honored for their efforts on and off the field during the month of October. Senior baseball standout Chris McCombs and field hockey sophomore Lucy Ireland were honored as the IU Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Month, while baseball freshman Kyle Waggoner was selected as the CHAMPS CHAMP of the Month for October.

McCombs, a 6-0 pitcher from Louisville, Ky., went 1-3 in 2007 with a 5.14 ERA and recorded 30 strikeouts in 35 innings of work for the Hoosiers.

"Chris has worked hard in the classroom and he is well deserving of this honor," IU head baseball coach Tracy Smith said.

"Chris has been the model of consistency, someone I can count on if need be. He shows great enthusiasm for academics and always has a positive attitude," Indiana Assistant Director of Athletics for Academics Kimya Massey said. "I have no doubts he will always be successful in future endeavors."

Ireland, a back from Chapel Hill, N.C., played in 17 matches for the Hoosiers in 2007 and started 11, recording one shot on goal.

"Lucy is a great student and well balanced person who is very responsible and takes a lot pride in what she does," Hoosier field hockey head coach Amy Robertson said. "She has set goals for the future and works very hard to attain those goals."

"Lucy is a very bright, motivated, and self-aware young woman," IU Academic Advisor Brenda Blackburn said. "Lucy works very hard for her grades and has strong work ethic to succeed. I look forward to seeing Lucy's future accomplishments."

Waggoner, a 5-10 outfielder from Brownsburg, Ind., earned Class 4A all-state honorable mention in 2007 and was a part of a Brownsburg squad that made it to the regional finals in 2006.

"This award reflects Kyle's commitment to being `good' in areas other than just baseball," Smith said. "I am proud of him for representing himself and the baseball program in this way. Good for him!"

"Kyle has been a model student-athlete and really understands the idea of giving back," Massey said. "He supports all student-athletes and realizes that others look up to him and he gives back every chance he gets. We all very much appreciate the time he gives out of his own time and I know others appreciate it as well. I foresee success in many areas for Kyle in the future."
