Indiana Falls in Big Ten Opener at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Indiana fell short in its first Big Ten game of 2012-13 on the road at Michigan on Thursday night, 65-48.
Michigan (12-2, 1-0) jumped ahead 5-2 in the early going. Sasha Chaplin cut into that lead for Indiana (9-5, 0-1) with a field goal, followed by Andrea Mize hitting the first 3-point field goal of her career to give IU a 7-5 edge. Andrea Newbauer then found an open Linda Rubene for a jumper to cap a 7-0 Hoosier run with Indiana leading, 9-5, with 12:10 remaining in the half.
The Wolverines did not stay quiet for long. Later in the half, IU led 15-11 before Michigan strung together six-consecutive points to regain the lead, 17-15, at the 7:04 mark.
The Hoosiers responded with back-to-back field goals from Simone Deloach and Aulani Sinclair to give IU a two-point advantage, 19-17. The Wolverines would end up closing the half outscoring Indiana 12-3 to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
Out of the break, Milika Taufa scored on a put-back layup on IU's first possession, but the Wolverines strung eight-consecutive points together to increase the home team's lead to 37-24. Chaplin then stopped the bleeding with a jumper from the right corner with 17:14 to play.
Later in the half as IU trailed 40-26, Indiana's Nicole Bell banked in a runner in the lane before McGhee connected on a field goal and later a 3-point field goal for IU's seven-consecutive point to the cut the deficit to seven with 12:59 to play, 40-33.
Michigan then took control outscoring Indiana 16-4 over the next 5:54 to build a lead that was insurmountable to hand IU it's first Big Ten loss of the season.
McGhee led Indiana scorers with 10 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Deloach came off the bench to score eight points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 fro the field and had four rebounds.
Three Michigan players scored in double-figures led by Sam Arnold's 17 points.
The Hoosiers will return home on Sunday, Jan. 6, for a bout with Northwestern in Assembly Hall at 2 p.m. ET.
