    Hoosiers Bounce Back With 70-62 Win Over Illinois

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team recovered from a seven-point deficit in the second to half to knock off Illinois, 70-62, on Jan. 6, 2008 in Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.

    The Hoosiers (9-6, 2-1 Big Ten) and Fighting Illini (10-5, 2-2 Big Ten) battled point-for-point for the first eight and a half minutes of the game, but an 8-0 Indiana run gave the Hoosiers a 20-15 advantage with 4:37 to go in the half. Back-to-back jumpers by Jenna Smith and Danyel Crutcher brought Illinois within one, 20-19, with 3:29 on the clock, but a 9-2 run by the Hoosiers sent the two teams into the break with IU leading, 29-21.

    The Fighting Illini stormed out of the halftime break on a 16-4 run over the first six minutes of the second stanza. A layup by Jamie Braun at the 13:32 mark stopped the Illini's run, but a 3-pointer and a layup by Lacey Simpson increased Illinois' lead to 42-35, with 12:42 remaining. A free throw by Andrea McGuirt ignited a 5-0 IU run that brought the Hoosiers within two, 42-40, at the 11:33 mark. Illinois' Rebecca Harris sank a 3-pointer with 11:08 remaining that started a 9-4 run as the Illini regained a seven-point advantage, 51-44, with 7:33 on the clock. But the Hoosiers were able to outscore Illinois 25-11 in the final seven minutes of the contest to come back for the 70-62 win.

    Whitney Thomas recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She also connected on four assists. Braun led the Hoosiers with 19 points and added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kim Roberson added 15 points in the win.

    Smith led all players with 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Crutcher added 15 and Simpson scored 11 points in the effort.

    Illinois outshot the Hoosiers, 46.6 (27-of-58) percent to 40.4 (21-of-52) percent and held a 10-board advantage on the glass (38-28), but Indiana forced the Illini into committing 17 turnovers. The Hoosiers outscored Illinois 24-4 on those turnovers.

    Indiana returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they travel to Columbus to take on No. 20/21 Ohio State at 7 p.m. ET. Thursday's game can be heard live on the IU Radio Network and on WHCC 105.1 FM in Bloomington.
