Hoosiers Outlast Minnesota, 80-77, in Double OT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - All five starters scored in double-figures as the Indiana women's basketball team knocked off Minnesota, 80-77, in double overtime, on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Assembly Hall.
A trio of free throws by Nikki Smith with 2:10 remaining in the second OT put the Hoosiers (11-7, 4-2 Big Ten) ahead by one point, 71-70, after getting fouled by Emily Fox on a 3-point attempt. Less than a minute later, Smith sank a three to increase IU's lead to four, 74-70, with 1:35 remaining. The Gophers (13-6, 4-3 Big Ten) then sank four straight free throws to knot the score at 74-74, with 1:06 to go. Amber Jackson and Smith continued to keep IU ahead at the line as each hit a pair of free throws to increase the Hoosiers advantage back to four, 78-74, with 23 seconds to go, but a Leslie Knight 3-pointer brought Minnesota back within one with just 14 seconds on the clock. Jamie Braun sealed the victory for the Hoosiers as she hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining for the 80-77 win.
With the Hoosiers up by two, 7-5, at the 16:53 mark in the first half, IU went on a 15-8 run to take a 31-21 lead with 2:45 to go until the break. However, Minnesota outscored Indiana 9-3 in the final 1:39 of the half on three straight 3-pointers by Katie Ohm to cut the score to, 35-30, at halftime.
The Hoosiers opened the second half on an 11-5 run, sparked by back-to-back jumpers from Jackson and Braun, to increase their lead to 46-35, with 13:26 remaining in the game. However, the Gophers bounced back with a 7-0 run of their own to cut IU's lead to four, 46-42, with 10:36 on the clock. A layup by Whitney Thomas kept Indiana ahead by six, 48-42, but a 10-5 Minnesota run brought the Gophers within one, 53-52, with 5:05 to go. A jumper by Knight put the Gophers ahead by one, 54-53, only to see IU answer on a layup by Braun just 17 seconds later. The two teams continued to trade the lead for the remainder of the half before ending regulation tied, 60-60.
The Gophers scored the first point in OT on a free throw by Brittany McCoy to take a one-point lead, 61-60, at the 4:24 mark. But a 3-pointer by Haylie Linn gave the Hoosiers a two-point edge, 63-61, with 2:50 on the clock. Free throws kept the scored knotted until Emily Fox sank a layup with 32 seconds remaining to give Minnesota a two-point lead, 68-66. A jumper by Thomas with just nine seconds left tied the score back up to send the teams into the second and final overtime with a score of 68-68.
Smith scored a season-high 21 points to lead all players. She sank 4-of-9 from the 3-point line and added five assists and three steals. Thomas collected her sixth double-double of the season, 16th of her career, with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Jackson recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Braun added 17 points and six boards and Kim Roberson netted 10 points and added eight rebounds.
The Hoosiers outrebounded the Gophers, 49-38, but were edged in shooting, 43.5 (27-of-62) percent to 40.0 (28-of-70) percent.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 20, when they face Michigan State at 2 p.m. ET.
