Illinois at Indiana Postgame Quotes

Illinois at Indiana
IU Head Coach Felisha Legette-Jack
"Today is a day where you saw the youthful side of our program. We couldn't seem to pull it together for some reason, and it's going to take some time to figure it all out. But this season has never been about wins for us- this season has been about character, about drive. It's been about effort and giving all that you can give on a constant basis every minute that you are out there. And we kind of lost our way a little bit; I think we got caught up in we gotta win, we gotta win, we gotta win. And winning isn't always about the number on the board. Winning can also be about being able to look in the mirror after the game is over and I think we lost that concept and we're going to figure out how to find it- and we will, we certainly will."
On missing layups and defensive energy
"Our ability to miss layups ... we missed about 10 layups that I counted myself and those are shots that we would normally make and then we missed those easy shots and it kind of took the wind out of our sails. So we've got to find a way to connect on those layups and that will give us the energy to continue to do the other things out there. You know you say it's a defensive game, and you want to believe that but you know the fun is about making the shots, once you make down the shots then the defense is easier to play."
On the play of Whitney Thomas
"That's (reaching 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds) not common at all. Only the great ones know how to pursue the hard work of the defense and then pursuit of the rebounds and also have the ability to put the ball in the hole. And I want to commend her for her efforts in that regard. I just think that she's a class act and she comes once in a lifetime and I'm just thankful that I've had the opportunity to be her coach the last three years."
Senior Whitney Thomas:
"We just have to get better. That's what it comes down to, us getting better and us coming together and it's going to take all of us to get there- to do anything the rest of the year we're going to have to get together and become one."
Illinois Head Coach Jolette Law
"I just want to say my team played extremely well today and it wasn't a pretty game, but we found a way to win. We beat a good club I have the utmost respect for Indiana, and my team came out and found a way to win."
On Whitney Thomas vs. Jenna Smith
"It was a battle, you know and like I said, Whitney Thomas is really one of the top players in this league. She plays extremely hard, she's aggressive and she plays on both ends of the court. A lot of people look at her offense and I watch her defense. She's one of the best defenders in the Big Ten, and just going back and forth with those two I just told Jenna to be smart, stay low. (Whitney) rebounds extremely well and it was a great battle today. I think she had a double-double and Jenna had 21 and 6 but I have the utmost respect for Whitney Thomas and this Indiana ball club.
