IOWA CITY, Iowa - Senior Aulani Sinclair scored 31 points and set the school record for most 3-pointers in a single season, but a strong second half by Iowa allowed the Hawkeyes to top IU in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night, 75-70. The Hoosiers connected on a school-record 13 3-point field goals.
Jasmine McGhee poured in 16 points for IU with four assists and two steals as freshman Nicole Bell added 12 points.
Indiana (11-17, 2-13) came out with the hot hand early using a pair of 3-point field goals from Sinclair and a third from Jasmine McGhee to lead 11-2 early. Bell made it a fourth-straight 3-pointer to cap a 12-0 Indiana run as IU led 14-2 with 15:38 on the clock.
Iowa (18-11, 7-8) put together an 8-2 spurt before a McGhee jumper halted that push to keep the Hawkeyes at arm's length. McGhee then later gave IU its biggest advantage of the half with an old fashioned three-point play to make it a 36-18 Indiana lead with 6:16 to go.
Melissa Dixon then became the Hawkeye offense scoring the next 14 points for Iowa to cut the deficit to single digits twice before Indiana went on to take a 44-34 advantage into the locker room.
Indiana maintained a 10-point advantage as the score read 49-39 after Bell free throw, but then Iowa started to put its offense together.
The Hawkeyes clawed back into the game to make it a 52-47 score with 14:03 to go before another McGhee 3-pointer pushed the Hoosiers ahead by eight points. Iowa fired back with a 7-0 run to make it just a one-point lead for IU with 11:52 remaining, 55-54.
The Hoosiers maintained the upper hand until Iowa tied the game a 60-60 with a pair of Morgan Johnson free throws to tie the game for the first time since it was 2-2. The Hawkeyes then took their first lead of the game with a Melissa Dixon layup with 5:20 to go.
Sinclair tied it back up with a field goal, but again Iowa struck back with a Jaime Printy long distance field goal to make it a 65-62 Hawkeye lead with 3:19 to go. The lead was short lived as Sinclair canned her seventh 3-pointer of the game to tie it back up.
Iowa then strung together a 7-0 run to give the home team its biggest lead of the game at 72-65. IU cut the deficit to four twice, but the Hawkeyes held on for the win on their senior night.
Indiana shot 13-of-26 from 3-point range and shot 47.3 percent from the field overall. The Hawkeyes took advantage of 21 IU turnovers that led to 27 Iowa points.
Sinclair is now the school record holder for most 3-pointers in a single season as she has made 72 on the season. She shot 12-of-22 from the field for the game and went 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.
