Hoosiers Fall to James Madison, 86-81, in Overtime of Second Round of WNIT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team suffered an 86-81 overtime loss to James Madison in the second round of the 2008 WNIT on Saturday, March 22 in Assembly Hall.
Whitney Thomas led the Hoosiers (18-15) with a career-high 26 points and added eight rebounds and four steals on the game.
The Hoosiers held the Dukes (24-9) to just four points for the first six minutes of the game while building up a 14-4 lead by way of six points from Amber Jackson. A three-point play by Lauren Jimenez cut IU's lead to seven, 14-7, with 13:47 on the clock. A 3-pointer by Jori Davis ignited a 13-8 run that increased the home team's lead to 27-16, with 7:11 remaining in the half. A layup by Kisha Stokes at the 6:47 mark sparked a 16-6 James Madison run that cut Indiana's lead to three, 34-31, at the break.
Indiana jumped out the halftime break on a 6-2 run to increase its advantage to seven, 40-33, with 17:11 on the clock. However, the Dukes answered as they put together a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the game, 43-41, with 14:16 left in the game. The Hoosiers answered on a Nikki Smith 3-pointer to regain a one-point advantage, 44-43, at the 13:59 mark. But the Dukes answered again on a layup by Jimenez. Another Smith 3-pointer put IU back up by two, 47-45, with 12:42 on the clock, and Kim Roberson added a free throw to increase the Hoosiers' lead to three, 48-45, with 12:02 remaining in the game. Following a jumper by Thomas at the 11:33 mark, James Madison sank a layup and a 3-pointer to come within one, 51-50, with 8:51 on the clock, but the Hoosiers responded with a layup by Jackson to maintain a three-point lead, 53-50. Another layup by Jimenez cut IU's lead back to one again, but a 10-0 Hoosier run regained an 11-point advantage for Indiana, 63-52, with 5:33 left in regulation.
James Madison kept battling back, cutting IU's lead back to one, 69-68, with just 30 seconds remaining on a 16-6 run. A pair of free throws by Roberson at the 28 second mark put IU back up by three, 71-68, but the Dukes outscored the Hoosiers, 4-1 in the final 17 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime at 72-72.
The Dukes opened OT with a 3-pointer by Jasmine Lawrence and never looked back, outscoring the Hoosiers, 14-9, for the 86-81 win.
James Madison advances to the third round of the WNIT and will face Kentucky in Lexington on Thursday, March 27.
Thomas sank 5-of-8 from the field and 16-of-18 from the free throw line for her 26 points. Jackson added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from floor, Jamie Braun scored 14 points, Davis added 11 and Smith scored 10 points in the effort. Braun also recorded a team-high six assists.
Evans scored a game-high 38 points, while Young added 30 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
The Dukes won the battle of the boards, 46-28, and outshot IU from the field, 43.1 percent (28-of-65) to 41.8 percent (23-of-55).
