Hoosiers Top Lambuth, 108-54, in Exhibition Opener
Nov. 1, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team topped Lambuth, 108-54, in its exhibition opener in Assembly Hall on Sunday, Nov. 1. Five Hoosiers scored in double digits as junior Jori Davis led the way with 24 points.
Senior Jamie Braun tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and added a game-high five assists. Junior Hope Elam recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Sasha Chaplin netted 14 points and grabbed eight boards, and freshman Sasha Bernard tallied 11 points, four assists and two steals.
"It was really great to get out there and play against someone other than ourselves," said IU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We were really kind of beating each other up for the last three weeks and it was good to get out there and play against an opponent. We scheduled Lambuth because they challenged for a national title in the NAIA and they're tough and gritty, and know how to win. They came out and really showed that they can compete. I was really proud of our young ladies and the way we shared the ball. We are a very unselfish team. I think that we are just going to continue to get better for the remainder of the season."
The Hoosiers dominated from the beginning, outscoring the Eagles 23-9 in the first seven and half minutes of the game. Outside of the first three minutes of the first half, Indiana led in double-digits for the remainder of the game and by as many as 54 en route to the win.
Indiana shot 53.3 percent (40-of-75) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from the 3-point line and 88.0 percent (22-of-25) from free throw line on the game. The Hoosiers won the battle of the boards, 54-31, and held the Eagles to just 28.6 percent (18-of-63) shooting from the floor on the game and tallied 14 steals on 26 Lambuth miscues.
Davis sank 9-of-13 from the floor, including a 3-pointer, hit 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Braun was 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-4 from the 3-point line. Elam made 6-of-12 from the field, including a 3, and sank 3-of-3 from the line. Chaplin sank 6-of-8 from the field, and Bernard was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.
IU returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 5, when it hosts Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. ET in the final exhibition game of the preseason. The Hoosiers open the regular season on the road with a game at Memphis on Friday, Nov. 13, before hosting IUPUI in Assembly Hall on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
