BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Jamie Braun netted a team-high 17 points as the Indiana women's basketball team opened exhibition play with a 77-49 win over the Hoosier Lady Stars on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Assembly Hall. Senior Nikki Smith added 13 points, while junior Whitney Thomas tallied 12 points and a team-best seven boards in the win.

Junior Kim Roberson opened the first half with a lay-up at the 19:55 mark that sparked a 17-0 Hoosier run. Indiana held the Hoosier Lady Stars scoreless until the 14:44 mark when Amy Amstutz-Watson sank a 3-pointer to put her squad on the board. IU maintained its defense for the remainder of the half while expanding its lead to take a 47-24 advantage into the break.

The Hoosiers held the Lady Stars to just 3-pointers in the first half as they shot 23.5 percent from the field.

The Hoosiers opened the second half with a 6-2 run to build up a 27-point lead, 53-26, with 18:12 remaining in the game. However, a 19-7 Hoosier Lady Star run cut IU's lead to 60-45, with 9:29 remaining in the game. A pair of Braun free throws ignited a 17-3 Indiana run that capped a 77-49 win for the Hoosiers.

    Postgame quotes

    Head Coach Felisha Legette-Jack
"I think our energy started after our shoot around today. Not only did our football team decide that they wanted advance to bowl game today; that was fantastic. And the other thing that happened today was our assistant coach (Vera Jones) from last year who stepped away due to her mom's death, came back to visit with us, and that shows that we are expanding our family.

"I thought our kids played youthful, and what I mean by that is that they played free. And if we can continue to have them play free throughout the season, I think we are going to have an exciting team to watch. We are going to make mistakes along the way and we are certainly going to have some bumps and bruises. But if we continue to play as free as we did today, the best is yet to come."

On the positives and negatives from the game:
"We have a freshman class that is not afraid to shoot the ball. I don't think they have ever seen a shot they didn't like. We have a team that likes to put the ball up in the air, and our challenge is going to be can we defend and will we defend and stay focused on the defensive end.

"With a team that was as tired as the Hoosier Lady Stars, we gave up too many points. I thought we should have held them to 30-35 points because they weren't doing anything but shooting three's. But we didn't play with enough passion, defensively, and we will get better with that."

On the effort against another team besides you own for the first time this season:
"I just knew we were going to get out and score buckets. I think that we can be one of the best teams in the Big Ten in terms of scoring. We have been doing a lot of defense in practice and that has really been challenging our focus. So getting out and playing against another team has really allowed us to get out and be who we are. It's good to get out there and play against other people.

    Jamie Braun
On settling into the point guard role:
"I thought things went really smooth for the first game. We definitely need to cut back on the turnovers in the second half. It wasn't that bad in the first half, but in the second half I got a little lackadaisical. But overall I thought things went pretty well for the first game."

    Nikki Smith
On the freshmen class' first game:
"I thought they handled themselves really well for being the first game. They are one of those groups that just loves to play the game, and that's why coach Jack recruited them. They will do anything to get better and they love it and that's why the came here. I was excited to see them go out there and get the nerves out and then settle in and play."

On going all out in an exhibition game:
"You have to be full-go all the time and deal with the bumps and bruises here and there. For me, this was so fun tonight because everyone went out there and played their hearts out. I'm just ready for the season to be here and I think we all are."
