Indiana vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff
November 13, 2007
Head Coach Felecia Legette-Jack
"This was a good game for our team to be able to play everyone and see what we can do. Our focus lasted for about 30 minutes and then we had a lull in the second half, probably for about the first 10-12 minutes. But we found our way back into our focus and I think for the most part we are getting better. There are some things we are going to work on and I am glad we are still in November because we still have a lot of time to improve this team."
On winning the rebounding battle:
"That is important to us. That is called effort. That is called `I want it more than you' and I think that Whitney Thomas saw an opportunity to play Indiana basketball and she went after a lot of those rebounds. It is also really great to see Nikki (Smith) go out there and play `Nikki' basketball where she goes out there and takes her shots, whether they go in or not.
"As far as the rebounding is concerned, that is who we are. We are a blue-collar team. We bring our lunch box to work every day and we need to continue to have that mindset and right now we don't have everyone on that mindset and we are going to grow this team to that point soon."
On the lull in the game:
"We saw youth. We got our rookies out there and it is very difficult when they don't know how I coach or the system, per se, yet, and they are out there by themselves. It is difficult but we are challenging them because we think this is a very intelligent group of young women. This is a great game to get them to play together because they are our future, and I tell you, our future is bright."
On the 22 turnovers in the game:
"We are going to work on some things, certainly, because we are definitely not comfortable giving up the ball 22 times. We are going to do some drills and understand the ball is something special and you don't give it away too easily."
On the offensive output:
"We were playing unselfish basketball today. I think we could have scored even more points but we gave up an easy shot for an even better shot. That is how this team plays. They are a tight team. They really work hard to make sure everyone feels good after the game but sometimes they have to play selfish basketball."
On the play of the freshmen:
"I love Whitney Lindsay. She attacks the basket. She is going to make some bad decisions here and there and turn the ball over but I tell you she plays hard. I though Ebony (Jackson) came off the bench and did a fantastic job. She has a knack for the rebound. She may be 5-9 on a good day, but she rebounds with the best of them. Obviously Jori (Davis) has done a tremendous job and Haylie (Linn) is finding her way."
Forward Whitney Thomas
On her scoring effort in the game:
"I feel like my teammates opened that up. Everyone was hitting from the outside and Amber (Jackson) in the post and that just opened things up for me and they fell in this time.
Guard Nikki Smith
On her play against Arkansas-Pine Bluff:
"I did the easy part. Jamie (Braun) and the post players were able to get the ball out and I think we moved the ball really well and that created open shots for me."
Guard Jori Davis
On her first career start:
"Coach Jack told me I needed to step up, that my teammate was out and I was ready to come in. It was exciting but I kept my composure and handled it pretty well."
